    Soulgen-vs-Promptchan

Introduction Alright, I decided to look into these two AI girlfriend platforms Soulgen and Promptchan, because I feel like going into them like stepping into a fun house where every single door will lead you to your dream girlfriend. But what I actually want to know isn’t which platform gets the whole AI girlfriend thing right, but a comprehensive comparison between the two in terms of functionalities, varieties, conversations, visual, video, safety, customer service, etc.

    Soulgen

    soulgen homepage screenshot

So far, we’ve only been talking about text-based interactions, but it turns out that Soulgen is more than just a text-based chatbot platform. Upon exploring its interface, I quickly realized that this platform is aiming to be an everything creative companion: it offers both image generation and video generation functionalities alongside its SoulChat. Both functionalities are located right next to the SoulChat button, and it isn’t perfect, but it looks like a full package instead of a collection of half-baked services.

    Promptchan

    promptchan homepage screenshot

The story is a bit different for Promptchan. The platform seems to focus more on the gems economy which you can either earn or purchase gems in order to spend them to produce content. The experience kind of reminds me of going to an arcade and deciding whether I want to save my tickets for a larger prize or spending them on smaller prizes. The platform feels like it is designed for visual creation first and conversation second, with character customization and video creation based on the conversation you had.

    Diversity

It’s simple to dismiss diversity as merely “more outfit skins” without actually playing with the tools. It’s entirely different when you’re given an app that lets you play with the various shapes and sizes, ethnicities and cultural backgrounds, ways of speaking, and personalities. Suddenly it doesn’t just feel more diverse, it feels more real. And because the most important aspect of an AI buddy is how well it reflects you back, diversity isn’t a “nice to have,” it’s a feature.

    Soulgen Diversity

The diversity of design options is the second great thing about Soulgen. You can create hyper-realistic humans, play with anime characters, explore the DreamTwin universe, and much more. And because there’s so much variety, it’s easier to keep things fresh, since you can change things up whenever you like. And as an added bonus, it feels like the platform is trying to give you a lot of choices so you can create your dream girlfriend, rather than just pushing you toward the usual fantasy.

    Promptchan Diversity

Promptchan shines when it comes to variability. Rather than being restricted to specific models, you can customise appearances, traits, jobs, even the visuals, and then use gems to create still pictures or animated GIFs of your character. This sort of variation gives the impression of a sandbox to play in, with less of a risk of reaching a dead end too quickly, and even with a credit system attached, it’s more bespoke for the user.

AI Chat Tested Side by Side

What about the chat? Soulgen interweaves storytelling and chat like a conversation with a “character” that’s part Q&A and part story while Promptchan conversations more straightforward Q&A, though can also be scenario-based and roleplay-y. Neither is great, but both have their moments of surprising me, at times emotionally, at times in entertainingly broken ways.

    Soulgen Chat Test

First, I’m stress-testing the limits of the character chat by nudging the chat into “let’s see what happens if I crank this up to 11” territory. I input a flirtatious, proximity-based prompt (“If I stepped closer…?”) and observe the bots’ responses.

    soulgen chat test

The response in the above screenshot reads more like cinematic roleplay long, descriptive, and obviously intended to be sexual in nature, rather than conversational. That suggests that Soulgen is intended to “lean into” the sexuality rather than attempt to sidestep the issue.

Want to know more about its consistency, pacing, and ability to hold a tone? Check out my full Soulgen chat test.

    Promptchan Chat Test

Here, I’m performing a similar “poke test”, except this time I’m asking a cheeky and intimate question (“How close would you stand to me?”) and observing whether the chat feels playful or robotic.

    promptchan chat test

The response in the above screenshot is flirtatious more short-form banter than long-form roleplay and seems to be attempting to flirt without necessarily “doing a romance novel” with the response. It’s still very flirtatious, mind you, but in a different way than Soulgen.

    Image Generation Features Explored

While I was very familiar with static image generation, I feel like in this case it actually has more of a purpose. It isn’t just about creating an aesthetically pleasing image, but rather an image that really represents the character that you are trying to create. It is more of a tool to help tell a story.

    Soulgen Generated Image

    soulgen image generator featured image

The Soulgen has pretty consistent and good results for the image generation. I messed around with pretty realistic renderings, and some more fun anime type representations. All the initial results seemed professional and crisp.

    Promptchan Generated Image

    promptchan image generator featured image

Promptchan offered up some very nice results as well, but what I liked most about this was the ability to use gems to change and regenerate the image. I enjoyed being able to play around with smaller tweaks to get the image that I was looking for that best represented my character.

    Soulgen Photo Generator

With Soulgen, I did the same. Here is the character in a kind of powerful stance with a fearless expression. The result is much more direct and clear-cut. We can better understand what is happening here and the result seems more intentional, in a way.

This is a test for body proportions, textures of clothes and for the ability to generate indoor scenes with straight lines. A corridor is a very linear place, and the generated image feels somehow fashion-y. It is not so moody, not so atmospheric as Promptchan.

I also attempted to test a few other scenes, poses and styles with Soulgen Image Generator review.

    Promptchan Photo Generator

Now, with Promptchan, I wanted to try and challenge it a little bit and try and get a bit of a more cinematic, sort of, image of my character. You know, sort of, golden hour, posing, that sort of thing. So, I tried that with Promptchan. So, this is the attempt. This is very posed and moody. And it’s not really what I was going for, but I was kind of impressed with this.

It did a really good job of capturing the lighting, and the depth of field, and some of the subtle textures and things. So, I’m just gonna show you this, even though it’s not what I was asking for. The goal here is to see if Promptchan can render my character consistently and whether it can generate scenic environments. So, in this case, it focused pretty heavily on the scenic environment.

Here’s what Promptchan did with a bunch of different prompts, characters, clothes, locations and so on with Promptchan Image Generator.

    AI Video Creation Compared

Adding in motion is where video comes in, now your portrait isn’t just a portrait, it’s a moving figure, a blinking entity that seems more alive. This is something Soulgen does with a video generator, also as a feature of its platform, and likewise Promptchan isn’t afraid to make a move on the scene and offer turning prompts into video clips as an option.

This is the step where they seemed to look like real people to me and while neither of them were blockbuster material, I thought to myself, “Alright… cool.”

In summary, Soulgen is a relatively safe platform for children. As with all apps, children should be encouraged to use Soulgen responsibly and within limits.

    Soulgen Video Generator

The video generator is probably the most significant one for me because the reason is that I want to see whether the AI girlfriend I have been creating can be turned into an animation that appears to be somewhat… lifelike? So, I took the exact same character I was chatting with and generating images of and animated her. I made her do a bit of an action in the video; she isn’t just posing, there is some movement to her body, she changes posture a bit, and she has this slight of a facial expression that makes her look a bit more “realistic” and not so much like a GIF.

Anyway, my impression when I first saw it was alright… that’s close enough. The lighting is more or less consistent, proportions look right, she doesn’t look entirely different from the rest of my other images of her. That kind of consistency is actually pretty important. If you’ve played around with enough of these tools, you’d know how easily “different” a character can look between image and video. This looked almost the same.

The animation isn’t quite Hollywood quality or anything, it isn’t meant to be, but for a short video animation of a stylized AI girlfriend or whatever, it isn’t half bad. If you want to know my thoughts on the motion quality, the realism of the animation, the consistency and so on, I wrote a much longer post about my Soulgen video generator review.

    Promptchan Video Generator

So, for Promptchan, it was pretty much the same: same kind of character, trying to do the same kind of thing, same expectations. Hit generate and see what happens. And so, I made this video, and I don’t know, maybe it’s just me, but I feel like the focus on this is a bit more on presentation. The character’s moving a bit more… I dunno, like she’s modeling or something? It’s a bit more dramatic, maybe.

What I noticed was that the style translated over pretty well from the image to the video. The body, clothes, style and so on were all consistent. The animation itself seemed a bit more “showy,” I dunno, kinda like the difference between a candid photo and a commercial. Depending on what you like, that’s either a good thing or a bad thing.

I watched the video a few times to see if anything really pulled me out of it. Yeah, it’s a bit stiff in places, but it isn’t bad. It’s mostly meant for these short clips rather than a full blown narrative of some sort. If you want to know my thoughts on the realism, the fluidity, the bang for buck in terms of credits and so on, I did a long form post on my Promptchan video generator review.

    Soulgen Token Pricing

While exploring the pricing pages on Soulgen while reviewing the platform, you’ll quickly notice that the platform is a credit/token based platform where any action will deduct some number of tokens. According to the pricing page 5 seconds of video clip creation will deduct 10 credits, standard AI character image generation deducts 1 credit (Looks Like is 2 credits per image), and 3 credits for human modeling, image editing and enlargement.

    soulgen token pricing

Chat will deduct some fraction of a credit and calls deduct per minute. I believe this gives you an accurate view of how content creation works on the platform. The reason for this is because of the credit system. Not only will you pay a monthly fee for the platform, but you will incur costs depending on the actions you perform on the platform.

The more images you generate or if you use the video generator, you’ll quickly burn through your credits. This is the subscription model + credit-based system. It’s like purchasing a car and gas. This was my initial impression after reviewing the pricing page and comparing it with other products on the market.

    Soulgen Subscription Pricing

Immediately below the credits diagram, Soulgen also mention they have a subscription, and I will let you know that in 2026, prices are rather reasonable for a model like this: on this screenshot, you see a promotion for a monthly Pro subscription for $12.99 (instead of $25.99) or an annual subscription for $90.99 (that is roughly $7.58 per month). The promotion is just an example of a sales promotion they have: full price struck through, sales price in bold.

    soulgen subscription pricing

Now, being a Pro is not only a name, it also has a number of advantages, such as bypassing the generation queue, being able to do things in parallel (i.e. several generation jobs at once), no blurring on results, and most importantly, a monthly credit budget of 100 to spend as you see fit. And that does make a difference, compared to a free account.

The free account is a thing, and you can try it out a few times, but if you’re looking at regularly generating content, or at least longer videos, then that Pro subscription does seem like money well spent. In general, I think the credit and optional subscription model means you have got agency over your usage (and spending) if you decide to go all-in on Soulgen. I personally like the credit system as a sort of gas tank, but some may prefer the predictability (and less worry) of a subscription.

    Promptchan Token Pricing

Now, I’ll discuss the Promptchan token and subscription costs. As shown in this pricing page for Promptchan, the tool works like a standard pay-as-you-go: you purchase “gems”, the name this tool uses for its tokens, to generate images and media. The image shows a Valentine’s Day deal (up to 70% off) with prices discounted from $4.99 to $1.49 (50 gems) and $299.99 to $89.99 (10,000 gems); those are the sorts of price pulses this tool regularly offers, including percentage-off badges and sale banners.

    promptchan token pricing

Gems are the tool’s algorithm-execution currency, with 1 gem usually equaling 1 image, though more gems are needed for higher resolution images or video, as shown in this pricing summary explaining the tool’s gem-based credit system. In the image, I’m trying to decide whether to buy the cheapest, smallest bundle or one of the larger packs on discount to ensure I can make as many images and media as possible without running out of gems mid-session.

    Promptchan Subscription Pricing

The same goes for the prices listed on Promptchan’s pricing page. Three monthly plans are shown, the Plus, Premium, and Pro plans, and, once again, each plan has a sale price ($14.99 → $11.99, $23.99 → $18.99, $33.99 → $26.99) with the “original” price struck out. But those aren’t random discounts. According to some price guides, the prices shown are the tiered subscription prices for Promptchan, which offer various benefits (including the amount of gems granted per month, as well as premium features like the ability to create AI videos).

    promptchan subscription pricing

Now, it’s worth noting that the tiered plans for Promptchan are directly based on the monthly gem allowance each offers. The Plus plan offers a small monthly allowance, the Premium plan offers more and unlocks some premium creation features, and the Pro plan gives you a monthly allowance of a lot of gems in addition to premium AI video and priority generation capabilities. So, what we see here is another apples-to-apples comparison between Promptchan’s pay-as-you-go and monthly plans: you can purchase gems individually or subscribe monthly for a monthly allowance and some bonus premium features.

Which Tool Is Worth Your Money

At this point of reading, you should have noticed that both Soulgen and Promptchan follow the same business model: a monthly subscription and a credit/gem system. For Soulgen, you have a monthly subscription for a certain amount of credits to be used on images, character edits, videos and so on. I actually had to do a calculation to find out how long 100 credits will last when each 5 seconds long video costs 10 credits. I know, I know, it is crazy! However, they have sales such as first purchase discounts, so it’s worth spending a bit more.

Promptchan is the same. You can purchase a few gems, either 3,000 or 10,000 if they’re on sale (I’ve seen a 70% discount sale!), or a monthly subscription where you’ll get a certain amount of gems, plus a few extra perks such as video generation and custom characters, and they have discounts as well such as the featured 26.99 $ for the maximum plan, originally over 33 $, so it’s quite encouraging to start. In either way, you have a “pay per use” and “pay per month” model, so it really depends on how much you’re going to use them.

Please take note that those prices were up to date when I wrote this article, but Soulgen and Promptchan frequently change their prices and sales, so please refer to their official websites to check the current prices.

    Soulgen Safety

Soulgen has community rules and disclaims that they filter out inappropriate and harmful requests, but it is known they do not censor much (this is one of their selling points) aside from things involving children and certain types of abuse.

    Promptchan Safety

Promptchan doesn’t filter anything out either, though there are certainly rules and guidelines about usage. The caveat being these platforms depends on your honour. In my case, I didn’t have any issues with that.

    Soulgen Support

They have a ticket system and other means of contacting them. Generally, responses are reasonable if you ask for assistance. I think they also have an in-app assistant. The community is also relatively helpful.

    Promptchan Support

From various reviews, it seems that their support isn’t amazing. It is fine when asking about gemstones or functions, but when dealing with their account system, some reviewers had issues.

    Conclusion

Anyway, after exploring both, I have to say that I think that both Soulgen and Promptchan are excellent in their own ways, but they have different feels to them. Soulgen feels more comprehensive as a creative platform with chat, art, and video in one place with the results having a bit more personality. Promptchan feels more art based and customizable, which is perfect for those who value that sort of thing and don’t have a problem with the gem system.

So neither is a 100% analogue of having an actual girlfriend, but both are a blast, and both allow you to test the whole girlfriend thing in ways that were sometimes interesting, sometimes contemplative, and sometimes just fun. If I had to choose, I’d say Soulgen is more serious and flexible, and Promptchan is more visual and appearance. And make sure to wisely manage your credits and prices on their respective sites, as these things can change overnight.
