Ourdream and Promptchan seem like similar AI chat platforms, but I wanted to do a comparison of the two to see the differences in the prices, options and tools that they offer. I didn’t realize how much their personality shines through in their products.
They’re offering AI girlfriend and boyfriend style chat platforms that include chatting, image generation, roleplay, and of course sex, but there are differences between them. Here’s my comparison review.
Ourdream
If you think of platforms like, say, vrchat, as the “big playground” then Ourdream is that, but with deep chat, emotional roleplay, character customization, and media production all rolled together. The overall effect is far more visceral and dense, and the way tokens and pricing are handled leaves you with a sense of ownership of a whole world, rather than a chatbot.
Promptchan
While promptchan is much more of a creative outlet. It’s louder, more in your face, more gem orientated, and more visual generative content focused. It has banners for sales, gem bundles, and “unlock exclusive perks” because it knows its market. Rather than trying to woo you, it’s all about pure creation. Depending on what you want, this may be your thing, or it may be too much.

Now, to be honest I had no idea how much the selection of voice and personality would play a role until I started going through all of the various tests and how much of an impact that selecting different models and filters had on perception of the AI as a whole. Having a variety of voices and personalities available to choose from isn’t just a value add, it is what determines whether or not your AI partner appears to be unique or a repetitive track. Having filters and tags is equally important because it allows you to customize your experience to your liking and not have it be too vanilla or, the worst of all, repetitive.
Ourdream Diversity
I was also surprised at the depth of character customizability in Ourdream. Instead of simply selecting a name and face for your assistant, you can also influence its personality, the tone it speaks to you with, and even background story. You can also specify topics of conversation to avoid and regulate what your assistant can talk about. You can customize the persona to be soft and warm or anything else, and the range of options is a great thing.

Promptchan Diversity
Promptchan takes the stylistic customization to a different level. There you don’t only talk, you create the look and character of the other side of the conversation, from anime to realistic to NSFW versions and everything in between. The filters serve to increase or decrease the level of content you wish to generate and the range of customization makes the process feel like a creative exercise. It is no longer about the way they communicate with you, but also about the way they are presented to you and this layer of the interaction creates a different type of emotional attachment.

Comparing Chat Quality in the AI Tools
The chat is the core of both Ourdream and Promptchan, so it’s not surprising that they both utilize AI models to ensure that the conversations are flowing, interactive, and most of all, as natural as possible. I noticed that the conversations changed from an awkward AI chat to some conversations that almost seemed like it understood me. This is an emotional touch, and I feel like both platforms aim for this.
OurDream Chat Test
Here I put the emotional pedal to the metal a bit. I wanted to see what OurDream would say, without directly asking a sexual question, so I asked “What would you whisper to me if we were alone?” Would it revert to cliche or try to build a scene? I was very pleased with what I got. The OurDream response was more narrative-driven, “I’d smile softly, lock eyes with you, and tell you we’re on a rooftop overlooking the city,” etc. It felt more like the AI was attempting to establish a romantic atmosphere, rather than just regurgitating a chatbot line.

PromptChan Chat Test
For PromptChan I took a different approach. I wanted to see how playful and flirtatious it could be, so I asked “How close would you stand to me?” Would it flirt, demur, escalate, or not? The PromptChan response was sexy and playful, the way you’d text your sexual partner, kind of half-joking but not really. There was some banter, some sexual teasing, a distance established and a clear attempt at escalation. It simply went for it.
This wasn’t a sexual question, but a test of confidence, of play, and of escalation. The PromptChan response felt sexier, more confident, and less romantic than OurDream. Image Generation Features Explored
Visuals-wise, both platforms offer the ability to visualise your dream friend. Ourdream has a stronger focus on cinematic visuals, which seem to lend themselves to moodier, story-driven imagery.

In either case, the initial output feels more like a ‘first draft’ than a ‘final product’ – which I kind of enjoy.

The prompt I chose to use with Ourdream was aimed at testing how well it did with atmosphere. Instead of a straight-forward portrait, I went with a scene of a girl at night on the beach with the moon in the background, a fire going, and her skin glistening in the light. I was a little surprised at the results. She looks like she’s a part of the scene, rather than being Photoshopped into it. The light of the fire even reflects on her skin, and it has an overall sort of atmospheric, cinematic feel.

What I was trying to get out of this prompt was an idea of how the generator did with low-light scenes, depth, and mood. Does it look decent? Does it create a nice, moody scene, or does it just look flat or sharp like a lot of AI art tends to? Ourdream seems to do best with a more cinematic style. Promptchan Image Generator
I used a very different prompt with Promptchan. Instead of a night scene, I wanted to try a bright one. I went with a daytime outdoor setting, nice sunlight, lots of green, mountains in the background, and a flowing dress. I was looking to see how it does with details like dress fabric, skin tones, and facial expressions in the daylight. And this one is pretty nice. The lighting is good, the background has nice depth, and she looks like she fits the scene rather than being Photoshopped in.

In this case, what I was trying to gauge was the proportions of the figure, the detail of the dress fabric, and the overall “this looks like a photograph” quality. Promptchan appears to lend itself more towards a bright, glamorous sort of style. It doesn’t feel quite as atmospheric as Ourdream, but it’s aiming more for that “this looks like a real photograph” sort of quality. Comparing Video Output Quality
The video aspect is where the movie-like quality came in. The images from Ourdream frequently looked like scenes with lighting, motion, and a sense of ambiance it almost seemed like little scenes, rather than animations. Promptchan’s video mode (at least with a higher-level subscription) feels more like animated character art, in the sense that it moves and emphasizes. Both have their advantages, and it comes down to a matter of whether you want atmosphere and storytelling, or style and art.

I also tested the video generator of Ourdream to see if they can bring the AI model I used to chat to life. In this video, the model can move, and the lighting effect also changes in the video. It also looks more like a movie clip than a GIF. I thought: “Alright… this is nice”. The model’s movement looks very smooth, and a bit exaggerated, as if trying to show off. It’s made to set up the scene.
What I was trying to do is to test how real the video looks and whether the personality of the model in chat is preserved in the video. It’s not hard to generate a nice still image. I also tested the video generator of Promptchan with the same setting, and the same character, to see how vivid the video looks. In the video, the pose of the model and the choice of the camera look more dramatic and fantastical. It’s quite bold. It knows what it wants to present. I was thinking about whether the video is more exciting, or just more dramatic compared to the other one. “Does it look better or is it just more dramatic?”
I was testing how dramatic the video can be, and whether it makes the video more exciting or not. Is the video exciting? Is the video cinematic? Or is it just a GIF with better effects? Ourdream Token Pricing
In addition to signing up for a premium membership, Ourdream also has a token-based system. The site refers to these tokens as “Dreamcoins”. With Dreamcoins, you can generate additional images, videos, or access premium character content. To get an idea of how much these tokens cost, I visited the token purchase page.On this page, you can purchase 1000 Dreamcoins for around $11.99, 5000 Dreamcoins for around $49.99 (with a ~20% discount), or 20,000 Dreamcoins for $159.99 (with a ~33% discount).
One thing to keep in mind here is that if you purchase a premium membership, you’ll receive a monthly allotment of Dreamcoins. You aren’t strictly purchasing tokens for one-off use. Instead, you’re supplementing your monthly allotment.
As I mentioned earlier, I’ve noticed many of these discounts aren’t one-time promotions. Instead, they seem to be the typical prices you can expect on the site. Because of this, larger token packages (or even purchasing a premium membership when it’s on sale) can offer much better value.
Ourdream Subscription Pricing
To see what Ourdream’s subscription pricing is like, I brought up their subscription page. One of the first things I saw was “75% Valentines Sale”. Below this banner, I found the monthly premium price of just $19.99 per month. Prior to this discount, I was quoted around $39.99 per month.
Here is a great example of how the site uses discounts to get you to sign up for premium membership. With this premium membership, you’ll receive unlimited messaging, audio messaging, image generation, video generation, and phone calls. On top of all these features, you’ll also receive 1000 Dreamcoins per month.
You can use these coins to generate even more images, videos, or access premium content. In addition to the monthly premium membership, you also have the option to sign up for an annual membership. By choosing to pay for an entire year upfront, the monthly price drops even further. In many cases, discounts like this are very common. I found this wasn’t a special promotion, but more of a regular occurrence on the site.
Promptchan Token Pricing
In the case of Promptchan, the gem economy dictates the cost of image generation, style enhancement, and sometimes video generation. The screenshot of the gem packages is saturated with the advertising language of discounts: “70% OFF” is emblazoned on each package, with a “was” price listed for each package ($4.99 for 50 gems, $14.99 for 250 gems, $299.99 for 10,000 gems).
It is evident from this that discounts are a common strategy used by Promptchan to sell gems, often around holidays or other themed days (I have seen similar deals at various times as I’ve been accessing the site). As gems are required to generate images (a few for a basic image, more for enhanced or video images), it is the gem discounts that influence the cost of creativity more than the subscription packages.
Free members receive a daily amount of gems, but if you wish to generate content regularly, the cost difference between full price gems and a discounted package of gems is noticeable. The interplay between the gems that come with a subscription package and those purchased separately defines the economics of image and video generation in my testing of Promptchan.
Promptchan Subscription Pricing
I did actually look at the page for Promptchan’s subscriptions and the impression I got was that they sell their subscriptions as “passes” to be creative. As seen in the screenshot you posted, they have a Plus, Premium, and Pro plan (20% off, as indicated in the top header, from their original prices, presumably 14.99, 23.99, 33.99 before discounts), and the Plus plan is the bare essentials (basic access, and a modest monthly gem allotment).
Premium is more gems and styles, and Pro (the “Best Seller” plan) is unlimited casual generations, video, custom characters, AI chat & voice, and the highest monthly gem allotment. What you don’t see in the prices is that Promptchan puts these plans on promotion all the time, whether it’s a holiday, or a first time subscriber, which means the “discounted” price is almost the default price for most users.
This is most relevant if you’re considering making a lot of images or videos, because half of that experience is just the gems you get as a subscription each month. In other words, it isn’t just a case of a subscription to “unlock” something, it’s a matter of how many gems they give you to do that thing.

Affordable AI Tools – Ourdream vs Promptchan
So after digging through both Ourdream and Promptchan’s token pricing, gem pricing and subscription based model pricing, the one underlying element of this review that was a little shocking to me was that Ourdream and Promptchan both seemed to be trying to have it both ways by being both: *Affordable and Aspirational.
As I explained above, Ourdream has an economy setup around the Dreamcoin token with bonuses for bulk purchases and a premium tier of the service which occasionally features sales and discounts on the monthly and yearly subscriptions. On Promptchan, gems and membership plans can be purchased with a seemingly more rigid discount schedule in place for both, which is easily accessible through the application itself.
The big surprise to me was just how much sales and discounts are part of the pricing model rather than events that happen once in a while and if I was looking to squeeze the most out of the tool, I would need to factor this into my shopping strategy in conjunction with the token pricing and subscriptions if I wanted to make the most out of my purchases.

Ourdream Safety
As far as I can tell, Ourdream adds its own filtering and safety features atop the chat and media generation APIs. Because it allows for NSFW and explicit conversations, it mentions using it in a way that suits you best, by setting limits and preferences, and it doesn’t allow for any illicit or illegal content to be generated. That’s always a tightrope to walk, but I did see a slider to control how ‘wild’ things got.
Promptchan Safety
The site Promptchan employs a filtering system, which in spite of allowing NSFW generation adheres to legal and moral rules. It also features a toggle for NSFW generation, and systems to prevent or minimize the generation of problematic content. One might describe it as the experience of “playing in a sandbox, but with some rails”. There is still some creative freedom, but the filter prevents the content generated from being non-consensual.
Ourdream Support
Ourdream appears to listen to its members: They have a discussion board, official tutorials, and a way to report incidents if something goes wrong. Several reviews cited live chat support and prompt issue fixing, which put me at ease given the fact that I wouldn’t be completely alone if I had connectivity issues. That’s a nice comfort to have when you’re planning to get a bit more intimate with a robot girl.
Promptchan Promptchan
The support system of Promptchan looks OK. They do have forums and a contact page, but from some reviews I read, it takes longer for them to reply, or at least not always. It doesn’t mean that you won’t get any support, but compared to the other sites, I have noticed that results vary. I mention this because it is important for you to know since you never want to get stuck in the middle of the road and not know what to do.
Conclusion
So, after experiencing both Ourdream and Promptchan, the main difference to me isn’t really the technology but more so the story they tell. Ourdream is an immersive fictional universe with options to personalize it and engage in extended interactions. Promptchan is a beautiful aesthetic focused companion generator especially when it comes to visuals and fashion choices. Which is better? Well, are you looking for an emotional or creative journey?
