    GirlfriendGPT-vs-Soulgen

AI girlfriend apps are getting a lot of hype these days and I’m just going to admit it: curiosity killed the cat. I saw GirlfriendGPT and Soulgen coming up a lot in terms of “AI girlfriend” or “AI image generation” or “uncensored chat apps.” Rather than try to figure out which one of them was actually worth using, I figured I’d just try both of them out for myself and see what they’re like. I messed around with the chat, generated some images, checked out the pricing and tried to get a sense of what it would be like to actually use the apps like a real user would. This is pretty much the outcome of that curiosity: it’s less of a technical product review and more of an informal field report.

    GirlfriendGPT

    girlfriendgpt homepage screenshot

GirlfriendGPT is primarily a text-based AI girlfriend app that also lets you generate images and hear a voice. The basic premise is to allow you to create a virtual girlfriend that you can chat with in a somewhat lifelike way. You can create characters, play out scenarios, and even have your AI girlfriend generate “selfies” when you’re chatting with her. GirlfriendGPT is best known for its “uncensored” mode, which is a euphemism for dirty shit. That’s the real reason most users are trying it out, and I won’t judge.

    Soulgen

    soulgen homepage screenshot

Soulgen is the polar opposite. It began as a pure image generation tool that allows you to create AI models from a text prompt. Over time, they added text chatting and more recently AI video generation. That makes it more of an AI model studio than a pure chatbot. If you want to generate realistic AI models or even AI video clips based on prompts, that’s what Soulgen does.

    Diversity

I learned early on in my testing that diversity is very important. If all AI characters seem the same then it doesn’t take long to lose the illusion. The best sites usually combat this by having large catalogs of characters, customisation options and filters so you can narrow down and find the perfect AI girlfriend for you.

    GirlfriendGPT Diversity

GirlfriendGPT’s solution to diversity is to go full on into customisation. You can change traits, looks, attitudes and chat style until your AI girl no longer feels like a chatbot and more like a character. This customisation helps to keep conversations varied as you can control the tone and personality of your partner.

The other way I noticed they combat this is the fact that there are so many different character archetypes already on the site. Some are romantic, some are playful, some are sarcastic, some are dramatic. It’s a little like perusing a character select screen. You can switch between them quite easily so if you get bored of one girl you can just switch to another. The filter is also quite simple, usually done by type, theme or popularity. Nothing fancy but it gets the job done and after a few minutes you will have usually found something that matches your mood.

    Soulgen Diversity

Soulgen’s diversity comes from the fact that it does image generation before chatbot. Instead of selecting a character from a list you can actually describe what you want. Do you want a realistic brunette in a blue dress? An anime style green haired girl? Just type it in and it will generate it for you. This makes the site feel very versatile, you aren’t limited to the characters that they have programmed, if you can describe it then the AI should be able to make something vaguely like it. The filter is mostly for style and generation modes rather than character types. You will see things like realistic, anime, artistic etc. It isn’t about browsing characters as much as creating your own.

AI Chat Tested Side by Side

Now we are getting to the meat of where I believe you will actually see a difference between the two platforms. The chat is, for most AI companion apps, the center of everything and where the line between fantasy and reality is either made or broken. The ability of a chat to make a character seem reactive, natural, and persistent is what will determine a good chat and a bad chat.

Both platforms utilize conversational AI to engage with you. However, the way they choose to do that can be quite different. Style of response, memory, character count, the ability to follow along with conversations, etc all greatly impact the chat experience. For many this will be the deciding factor as to which platform they enjoy more.

    GirlfriendGPT Chat Test

I tested the chat part of the program by talking with a model named Emma on GirlfriendGPT. I started by asking her how she would seduce me with her voice and her attitude. My intention wasn’t to play chat-up with a chatbot, I was interested in how the AI would generate personality, tone, and story from this question.

    girlfriendgpt ai chat test

My first impression was that the chat comes in the form of a prose description. Before giving me an answer, the AI describes Emma tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, taking a moment to think and then looking at me curiously. Then the chat takes a more introspective turn, talking about sincerity, interests, and character. Rather than just answering my question, the AI crafts a short prose scene.

If you want to read the rest of my chat with this tool and check if the character kept this personality, check out my full GirlfriendGPT chat test.

    Soulgen Chat Test

I repeated this experiment on Soulgen, to check the chatbot functionality of this program. I started with a slightly cheeky line, asking what she would do if I said she had to behave. I wanted to check how the AI responded to cheekiness and if it used story or chat.

    soulgen chat test

The answer was much more flirtatious and direct. Rather than going into all the motions, the character answers directly, although describing herself as stepping closer and whispering a cheeky response back. Overall, I found the chat less concerned with story and more concerned with being direct. If you want to see how the chat develops in the longer term, and if the personality stays consistent, you can read my full Soulgen chat test.

    Comparing Image Quality Results

Image generation is where we start to get into the fun visual aspects of these platforms. Both platforms allow you to create images with your AI character. But they treat image generation differently.

    GirlfriendGPT Generated Image

girlfriendgpt ai image generator featured image

The result of this means the look and application of images can be quite different. Some are more chat-focused and meant to improve roleplay.

    Soulgen Generated Image

    soulgen image generator featured image

Others are more focused on creating character images or testing new looks. Regardless, images offer an additional aspect beyond just chat.

    GirlfriendGPT Photo Generator

I wanted to test the GirlfriendGPT image generator to see how photorealistic a character generated looks. I generated an image of a blonde character in a bedroom wearing bright pink lingerie. The first thing I noticed was how photorealistic this looked. The lighting, skin tones, and background detail make it look like a real photograph rather than a generated image.

    Another Image by GirlfriendGPT

    girlfriendgpt ai image generator

I wasn’t just interested in seeing if the tool would create a pretty image. I was interested in how photorealistic the character would be, if you were to generate images as part of a chat session with that character. It does change the dynamic of a chatbot a bit if you can create photorealistic images of your character. It makes it feel a little more like you’re chatting with a character, rather than a chatbot.

If you’re interested in how photorealistic other generated images look and how consistent they are, I have a full GirlfriendGPT image generator test.

    Soulgen Photo Generator

I also tested the Soulgen image generator to see how photorealistic a character generated looks. Here’s an image of a character in a light blue dress walking down a hallway with dramatic lighting. This is much more a ‘scene’ than a portrait. It looks like a still from a movie or a photoshoot.

    Another Image by Soulgen

    soulgen image generator

I was interested to see how it would generate a scene around a character. While the GirlfriendGPT image generator seemed to focus just on the character, Soulgen seems to generate a full scene. The lighting, depth of field and composition look like a photoshoot or a movie still.

If you want to see more photorealistic images and test how the tool works with other prompts, I have a full Soulgen image generator test.

    GirlfriendGPT Token Pricing

I went ahead and looked up the GirlfriendGPT token price. As you would expect, coins are the “currency” that enables most functionalities. On the screenshot, you can see the three packages. The first package is 300 coins for 9€, the second package is 840 coins for 23€ and it says that you can generate more than 140 images, and the third package is 2000 coins for 45€, with a 33% bonus. As you can see, the bigger the package, the better the value.

    girlfriendgpt token pricing

Based on my experience with the platform, coins are required for image generation, video generation, voice functionality, etc. For instance, image generation usually costs 100 coins, depending on the model and resolution. Similarly, video generation (small clips) also costs coins.

The more features you use, the more coins you burn through. At the moment, the platform offers a 12% and 33% bonus (see the screenshot). I am assuming that it is relatively common to have some discount and/or bonus when purchasing coins.

    GirlfriendGPT Subscription Pricing

I went ahead and looked up the GirlfriendGPT subscription price as well. As opposed to coins, the subscription is more of a “membership”. On the screenshot, I can see two options. The monthly subscription costs 12$/month and the yearly subscription costs originally 144$/year (see the screenshot for the price before the discount). With the discount, the yearly subscription costs 115$/year (20% discount). Please note that the original price is 144$/year.

    girlfriendgpt subscription pricing

The interesting thing about the subscription is that it offers a bunch of features at once. It comes with 400 coins for free every month (to be used for image generation, video generation in chat, etc.), 5000 messages for free every month, long term chat history, premium AI models, in chat image generation, short video generation (5s or so), NSFW chat, and voice.

In other words, if you are planning to use the platform extensively, I would go with the subscription instead of buying coins. Like any other AI service, GirlfriendGPT seems to offer discounts and promotions. As you can see on the screenshot, there is a 20% discount for the yearly plan.

As usual with SaaS services, prices might change over time and the number of coins required to generate images or videos might vary depending on the model and resolution.

    Soulgen Token Pricing

When I began to dig into Soulgen’s credit system, it became fairly apparent that credits are what power most of what you can do on the platform. As you can see from the screenshot above, the costs are fairly transparent and outlined in a table. It costs 1 credit per image to generate an AI character image. If you use the “Looks Like” option, it will cost you 2 credits per image. It costs 3 credits per image to generate a human modeling image, which I’m assuming has something to do with the level of detail and realism.

    soulgen token pricing

Image and continuation editing cost 3 credits per image, and video costs 10 credits for every 5 second clip. Text chat costs .2 credits per message, voice chat costs 1 credit per minute of chat, and chat image generation costs 2 credits per image. Even creating your own AI Soulmate costs 10 credits. Overall, the credit system seems fairly straightforward. Everything you do, from chatting to generating images to creating videos costs credits.

    Soulgen Subscription Pricing

This next screenshot is of the Soulgen Pro pricing page. For those that might not know, this is the paid subscription package that unlocks the full potential of the platform. As you can see from the image above, they are running a promotion that gives you up to 70% off of your subscription. But if you look to the right, you can see the “original price” of the subscription packages they offer. The monthly subscription normally costs $25.99, and the yearly subscription package costs $155.88.

    soulgen subscription pricing

The Pro subscription unlocks a number of features that enhance your user experience. Instead of having to pay attention to how many credits you have at all times, the Pro package comes with 100 free credits per month (or 1,200 per year). It also unlocks a number of other premium features such as the removal of blurred photos, the ability to multitask, priority queues for content generation, and the ability to generate multiple items at once.

The Pro package essentially turns Soulgen from a basic image generation platform into a more full-featured AI companion experience where you can generate images, chat, etc. without needing to obsess over your credit count.

The thing that struck me as odd when looking at the pricing information is just how heavily discounted the plans were. As you can see from the above screenshot, they are offering 50% off the monthly package, and 70% off the yearly package. This tells me that they run a lot of promotions, so if you happen to catch them at the right time you might get a different price than what I’m showing you here.

This seems to be somewhat common among the various AI companion sites I’ve been looking at, so prices may vary depending on when you look at the site.

    Pricing Summary and Recommendations

Having spent a stupid amount of time on both the GirlfriendGPT pricing page and the Soulgen pricing page, I’ve come to realize that most AI Girlfriend platforms follow a similar model. They look totally different at first, but if you sit with them for a bit, they are fairly similar: a monthly subscription model with perks vs a credit-based model where you pay for credits and then burn those credits when you do things. Both can be equally valuable depending on your intended use of the platform.

GirlfriendGPT is more of an “all-in-one” type model. You pay your monthly subscription fee and you get X messages per month, some credits, and other perks like images, videos, voice messages etc included in your monthly fee. This can be better if you know you are going to message a lot and create a bunch of content and not have to keep track of your credits.

Soulgen is a bit more of a “creative credits” type model. You pay for credits, and then you use those credits for various actions like generating images, editing images, messaging, and creating AI videos. It’s kind of like going to an arcade and putting money on a game card… each action costs credits, but you also have more flexibility in how you use your credits.

I have noticed during my time testing both platforms that they run a lot of promotions and discounts. Sometimes the subscription model and bundles can change fairly regularly depending on whatever promotion or sale they are running at the time. So, the prices you see here may not be the prices you see there. This is a pretty common practice for AI platforms looking to get new users to try out their paid plans. Just a heads up before you start doing math.

The prices listed below are accurate as of the day I wrote this review and as with most SaaS products, AI Girlfriend platforms change their prices fairly regularly. There are promotions that come and go, bundles change and sometimes completely new plans are created. If you’re seriously considering trying either of these platforms out, I recommend checking out the GirlfriendGPT pricing page and the Soulgen pricing page to get the most up-to-date pricing and whatever promotion is currently live.

    GirlfriendGPT Safety

Whenever it comes to AI companions, there’s always a safety aspect to consider. GirlfriendGPT does allow for unfiltered chat, but they do have some safety policies in place when it comes to your privacy and chat activities. They do emphasize that it’s a private chat platform, and they do offer private billing and secure accounts to protect your anonymity. Like any other NSFW companion platform, you do have to be over 18 to use those features.

    Soulgen Safety

Soulgen’s approach to safety is a bit different since it’s an image generation platform. AI image generation is always a risk for misuse or deepfake creation, so they have some account and community policies in place to prevent that. Like with any other AI generation platform, it’s a bit of a platform and user responsibility. If you use it as intended as a creative tool and not to push boundaries, you should generally be fine.

    GirlfriendGPT Support

The support experience on GirlfriendGPT is fairly standard for a smaller AI platform. You do have some knowledge base articles that explain the basic features and subscription plans, and a contact form if you need technical support. Most users do seem to get support through community forums or YouTube tutorials. It’s not the best support experience that I’ve ever seen, but it gets the job done if you have basic questions.

    Soulgen Support

Soulgen has a slightly more extensive support experience. Since image generation can be fairly complex with all the prompt options and settings, they do have tutorials on how to generate images, how to refine your prompts, and that kind of thing. This is actually fairly useful if you’re new to AI image generation. Once you’ve played around with prompts for a bit, you’ll realize that a single-word change can drastically change the image results.

    Conclusion

After using both platforms for a while, I do think that I have a fairly simple conclusion. I don’t think that these two platforms are as directly competitive as they sound on paper. GirlfriendGPT is more of a chat platform with images and voice as nice-to-haves. If you want a highly interactive and personal AI companion, that’s really where GirlfriendGPT shines.

Soulgen is more of an AI character studio. If you want to generate images, play around with prompts, or even create short-form AI videos, then Soulgen is the more interesting platform. I ultimately did end up using both platforms for different use-cases.

Some days I wanted to chat. Some days I just wanted to see what kind of wild character an AI could generate from a random prompt. And to be honest… the fact that both options exist for different days is what makes the AI companion market so interesting right now.
