I used both of the most popular unfiltered AI girlfriend services, GirlfriendGPT and Promptchan. But which one provided the better chatbot experience? Which one felt more like a chatbot, and less like a graphics engine? Hell, which one was just more fun to use once the honeymoon phase was over? Well, let’s find out. GirlfriendGPT and Promptchan both provided AI girls that I could create and talk to. But they did it in different ways. This is how I saw them.
GirlfriendGPT
GirlfriendGPT is first and foremost an AI chat experience. It’s a chat and roleplay site. The girls feel more like girlfriends, rather than models for images. You can customize their personality. Talk to them. Even have them generate images or voice responses depending on which service plan you have. The site places a heavy emphasis on emotional connection and memory.
In other words, the AI is supposed to remember things about your interactions with it and adapt accordingly. So GirlfriendGPT isn’t an image generator. It’s a site where you can create a digital girlfriend that you interact with over time. Sometimes it works great…sometimes it has the memory of a goldfish with Wi-Fi. But when it works, the personality illusion kinda holds up.
Promptchan
Promptchan is basically the reverse of GirlfriendGPT. Yes, they have chat features as well. But you can tell that the majority of their resources go towards image generation and visual customization. You input a prompt. Select a style. Fiddle with a few settings. And then the AI generates an image almost instantly.
They support a lot of styles, ranging from anime to realistic to cinematic to fantasy. The site feels more like an AI art studio rather than a traditional chatbot site. Now don’t get me wrong. You can definitely chat with AI girls on Promptchan. You can even create custom girls. But if GirlfriendGPT is a relationship simulator, Promptchan is a character designer where image is everything.

Diversity
After playing around with a few of these platforms, one of the first things you start to notice is the importance of diversity. If all the characters look the same and act the same, the novelty wears off quickly. A good AI girlfriend platform needs diversity: different personalities, different looks, different styles, and different ways to filter through them. Otherwise, it’s just scrolling through copies of the same girl.
GirlfriendGPT Diversity
GirlfriendGPT tackles this with personalities and roleplay scenarios. You’ve got shy girlfriends, confident girlfriends, playful girlfriends, and so on. You can also customize traits to make your own girlfriend and dictate how she acts and talks. There are even filters to find girls by personality, which saves you from endlessly scrolling to find the type of scenario you’re in the mood for. Since the AI also retains some memory of longer conversations, personalities evolve a bit too. That’s where GirlfriendGPT excels. The diversity isn’t just about different looks, it’s about different behaviors.

Promptchan Diversity
Promptchan tackles diversity in the opposite way. Instead of focusing on different personalities, you get a huge selection of image styles. You can generate girls in an anime style, hyper-realistic, fantasy, cinematic, and so on.
You’ve also got filters, but they’re centered more around visual prompts than personality archetypes. Want an anime girlfriend in a fantasy world? Done. Want a photorealistic girlfriend in a particular setting? Also done. You can control Promptchan with its prompt system rather than relying on set personalities. It feels less like browsing through AI girlfriends and more like playing with an art generator.

Which AI Companion Has Better Chat
Chatting is where the personality really starts to shine through. An ideal AI girlfriend should chat like a real person, keep the conversation going, and hopefully remember what you talked about before. Otherwise, it’s just talking to a slightly more intelligent version of Google.
GirlfriendGPT leans heavily into this, with memory functionalities to help retain personality and context in longer conversations. Promptchan has a chat function, but it feels a lot more secondary than the image generation tools. In real use, that means the chat on GirlfriendGPT tends to feel more immersive, while Promptchan feels more like it’s there to facilitate the image generation process.
GirlfriendGPT Chat Test
When I ran the GirlfriendGPT chat test, I began by trying to push the chat outside of small talk to see how the character would respond. I didn’t ask some generic “How are you?” Instead, I threw in something a little more playful. I said that if a guy could only win her over with his voice and personality, what would he have to do? I was curious to see if the chatbot would respond with a one-liner or engage in the roleplay.
What ended up happening was fairly interesting. The character didn’t just give a one-liner response. She paused mid-sentence, described some actions and gestures, and then answered my question. It didn’t feel like a chatbot.
It felt like a scene. She said that she enjoyed sincerity and then asked me to tell her something about myself, which took the whole chat further in the direction of character development. It felt like the AI was trying to steer the chat into something narrative.

Promptchan Chat Test
When I ran the Promptchan chat test, I approached things a little differently. I tried to push the chat more in the direction of flirtatious teasing to see how naturally the character would respond. So, I asked a simple, but suggestive question about how close she would stand next to me in real life. It wasn’t about just trying to get a sexual answer, I wanted to see if the AI could keep the character while responding to something a little teasing.
The response felt much more laid back than the GirlfriendGPT chat. Instead of trying to create a big narrative, the character responded in a more conversational way, kind of like you were texting with someone who is a little bit naughty. She made a joke about why I was asking that question already and then played along with the scenario with a sexualized description of standing really close after finishing a skating routine. The tone was flirtatious, playful, and very casual.
It gave the chat a more relaxed feel. Less narrative. More playful banter. You can really start to see the difference once you begin comparing several messages back and forth. Image Rendering Performance
Image generation is probably where both tools are at their most fun. Writing a prompt and then having a full picture of your character pop up a few seconds later still feels a little magical.
GirlfriendGPT Generated Image
GirlfriendGPT has an image generation feature, although it’s mostly used within the AI girlfriend scenario, so girls will sometimes send images during a conversation, or you can generate images based on prompts.
Promptchan Generated Image
Promptchan has this feature too, but it’s what the platform is actually built around. It supports multiple styles and has a ton of customization options, so it’s the perfect tool for anyone who wants to play around with character creation and visual prompts.

When I ran my GirlfriendGPT image generator test, I wanted to see how well it can take a chat character and turn them into an image. So, I generated an image of the AI chat character I was chatting with earlier. This is what I got:

I like how this image feels like it is connected to the chat character. The pose, the background, the details all look like they belong to this particular chat character. I love how dramatic the background and the lighting are. The scene looks really beautiful, like something out of fashion or fantasy photoshoot. The image almost looks like a magazine photo. It looks like Promptchan focuses a lot on drama and aesthetics when it comes to generating images of chat characters.

GirlfriendGPT Token Pricing
When I opened up the coin store in GirlfriendGPT, it felt like the gas pump for the platform. Instead of paying per feature, coins unlock more of the visual features of the platform. In the screenshot I grabbed, the smallest coin bundle was 300 coins for 9 euros, which seems to be the starting point for anyone who wants to create a few images, or use the premium features. The second tier was 840 coins for 23 euros, and the interface even tells you that you can create over 100 images with this bundle, depending on your usage.
The largest bundle I saw on screen was 2,000 coins for 45 euros, which is presented as the value bundle. What I noticed is that GirlfriendGPT likes to throw discounts and promotions around. You can see the +12% and +33% coin bonus in the screenshot, which just means that you get bonus coins for buying larger bundles.
These coins unlock features like media creation. According to my testing and research of the platform, image creation costs about 6 coins per image, short video clips cost about 20 coins per creation, and voice features eat up a few coins as well.
It’s essentially a token system like you see at an arcade. The chat feature may be included in your subscription, but the moment you start creating images or short video clips, you’re going to start eating away at your coins.
GirlfriendGPT Subscription Pricing
This second screenshot shows the second half of the pricing system: the actual membership plans. GirlfriendGPT doesn’t just operate on a token system, it has a membership plan that unlocks the full platform. The standard month-to-month membership plan I saw during my testing period was 12 dollars per month, which unlocks the core features of the platform.
The longer you commit, the cheaper it gets. For example, the yearly membership plan is normally 144 dollars per year, but as you can see in the screenshot I grabbed, there was a 20% discount going on, which brings the price down to around 115 dollars per year, or 9.58 per month averaged.
Under the membership benefits, you can see what the subscription unlocks. You get roughly 5,000 chat messages per month, long-term chat history, access to premium AI models, voice features, and in-chat image creation. You also get 400 free coins per month, which can be used to create images or short video clips.
You also get video creation capabilities, with clips of up to around 5 seconds, although these still cost coins to create. What became very clear while navigating the pricing page is that GirlfriendGPT offers a lot of discounts and promotions. I saw a yearly discount, and the coin bonus in the screenshot, but other promotions on the platform offer 20-30% off of the membership plan as well.
Promptchan Token Pricing
I hit the promptchan pricing page for the first time during my test and have to admit, it’s a bit like entering an online Gamecenter, where everything goes by “Gems”, the driving currency behind the AI tools. The prices as shown in my screenshot, range from 50 Gems for $4.99 as the lowest package if you only want to test a few images, to 250 Gems for $14.99, 900 Gems for $29.99, 1800 Gems for $59.99, 3000 for $99.99 and 10000 Gems for $299.99 as the largest package.
One thing that stands out immediately is the Valentine’s sale, offering 70% off the packages. Sales seem to be a common occurrence, given that almost every package in my screenshot shows a sale price next to it. What is important is the value of the gems though.
In the promptchan ecosystem, the standard image costs approximately 1 gem, with higher quality options or additional features costing additional gems. That means the lowest package offers dozens of images, while the higher packages seem to target powerusers of the AI image generation. In addition to that, you can spend gems on certain premium generation options and certain combinations of styles may cost a few gems more per image.
Promptchan Subscription Pricing
The second screenshot shows the flip-side of the promptchan pricing model; the monthly subscriptions. While gems allow you to generate on demand, the subscriptions offer additional perks and a monthly allocation of gems. During my test I saw three packages. The “Plus” package normally costs $14.99 per month, the “Premium” package costs $23.99 per month and the “Pro” package is $33.99 per month.
Once again, we see one of the typical sales, this time for 20% off the packages, but the base prices are what matters for an understanding of the offering. The “Plus” package comes with about 100 gems per month, the “Premium” package offers 400 gems and the “Pro” package comes with about 800 gems per month, in addition to unlimited casual image generation and access to all premium features, such as AI video generation and custom character images.
As I observed during my test, the subscription seems to be geared toward those that use the generator as a regular tool. Given that a standard image costs about 1 gem, those gems per month translate directly to the amount of images you can generate before you need to order more.
Video generation and a few premium options are also locked behind the subscription tiers, in particular behind the “Pro” package, which also unlocks the full suite of advanced AI generation tools on the platform. Overall it seems pretty simple: Gems are the currency that allows you to generate images and the subscriptions offer you both premium features as well as a monthly stream of gems to keep the creative juices flowing.

Pricing Summary and Recommendations
Alright, so, after a little bit of poking around on the pricing pages, and some more clicking around of the dashboards, and some more math in my head, I found that GirlfriendGPT and Promptchan are more similar than I thought. GirlfriendGPT and Promptchan do not charge per prompt. They both use a mix of a subscription model for the platform, and some kind of in game currency (coins or gems) for the more computationally intensive creation-based features such as image and video generation.
GirlfriendGPT is closer to the “AI girlfriend” side of the house. The subscription is mostly for the “girlfriend” features like chat, memory, voice, and models, while coins are mostly for the image/video generation features. Promptchan is closer to the “AI generator” side of the house. The subscription is mostly to increase the number of generations you can perform and their features, while gems are mostly to control how many images (or other media) you can generate.
Based on my testing, I found that although the pricing model can appear confusing at first, once you get a feel for it, it’s actually pretty simple. The subscription gets you into the playground, and the coins/gems are the currency for the things you can do in the playground. Based on my testing, I also found that prices are highly subject to change.
Both platforms seem to have discounts and sales, so what you see here today may not be what you see tomorrow. With that in mind, the prices shown in this review are the prices at the time of my testing and screen-shotting and are subject to change. GirlfriendGPT Safety
GirlfriendGPT is an adult service. This means that most of the content is for users 18. They do have an age gate to access the service, but as they allow unfiltered adult content and roleplay, they do have some rules against illegal or harmful content. In my experience, they seem to approach safety from a position of trying to restrict only the most egregious and illegal requests rather than filtering broadly. This is a balance between freedom of creativity and some notion of safety.
Promptchan Safety
Promptchan also advertises itself as an uncensored service, however primarily focused on AI generated art. As such they also allow unfiltered content but do have some rules against illegal or harmful content. Their approach to moderation seems mostly restricted to preventing abusive or illegal content rather than filtering broadly. This means that for the most part you have a lot of freedom in terms of image generation, however still some rules to ensure you don’t go too far outside the bounds of legality.
GirlfriendGPT Support
The support for GirlfriendGPT seems to be primarily documentation and guides for the platform as well as some way to directly contact the team. Most of the questions I had were solved by referring to the guides or other users. The UI is simple enough that you shouldn’t need to contact support too often, however if something breaks or you have a billing question you want to make sure you have a way to get support.
Promptchan Support
Promptchan also seems to have support in the form of documentation and direct contact with the team. Given that the platform is more for creative tools, the documentation seems to largely involve tips for writing prompts, setting styles, and troubleshooting errors with generation. The community aspect of the platform also seems fairly active, with users sharing prompts, styles and ideas for generating particular types of characters.
Conclusion
Having used both platforms for a while now, it seems fairly clear what the differentiator is between them. GirlfriendGPT feels first and foremost like a chatbot, and secondly an image generation platform. The focus of the service is on chat, character, and some attempt to maintain continuity over time. Promptchan feels like an image generation platform that also happens to have chat. If you enjoy mucking around with prompts, styles and generating lots of different character designs, Promptchan feels like a playground.
Which is better? Well, I think that depends on what you want. If you want to have extended conversations and attempt to simulate a relationship, GirlfriendGPT feels like the better choice. If you want to have more freedom with prompts and more powerful character image generation, Promptchan feels like it might be more your speed.
Either way, having tested both platforms I was left with the feeling I seem to get every time I play with a new AI platform. This space is moving incredibly fast. Things that feel impressive today will probably look ancient in 6 months. And for some reason, I’m really excited to see where this all goes next.
