There’s a new sheriff in the world of online shopping scams — and it doesn’t wear a badge, it runs on algorithms.
The UK’s Starling Bank has launched a system called Scam Intelligence, an AI-driven assistant that spots fraudulent listings before shoppers part with their cash.
You upload screenshots, chat messages or product links from places like Facebook Marketplace, eBay, Vinted or Etsy, and within seconds the AI whispers a warning if something smells fishy.
It’s a simple idea with powerful potential. Using Google’s Gemini foundation model and Starling’s own scam-pattern data, the tool looks for shady phrasing, mismatched payment details, fake seller photos, even that too-good-to-be-true price tag.
Early trials showed a dramatic 300 percent spike in canceled payments after users were prompted to “pause and review” their purchase.
Fraud minister Anthony Browne even called it a “template for what responsible banking tech should look like.” That’s quite a compliment, considering how fast scammers themselves are evolving.
Just last month, investigations into the surge of UK fraud revealed that criminal networks are already weaponising generative AI to mimic real customer-service chats, clone voices, and build fake payment pages.
In some cases, victims couldn’t tell the difference between a real delivery company and a deepfaked one.
Which makes Starling’s move feel less like a gimmick and more like an urgent response to a digital arms race.
But here’s where things get interesting. A few cyber-ethics researchers have warned that systems like this could be a double-edged sword.
Fraudsters adapt quickly — when AI spots one pattern, they simply teach their bots to disguise it.
Some early analyses, including a recent study on scam-bypassing algorithms, show that AI detectors can be tricked by subtle linguistic tweaks or audio distortions. It’s the eternal cat-and-mouse game, now fought in code instead of back alleys.
And then there’s the human factor. Will people actually use it? You’d be surprised how many of us skip safety checks when chasing a “limited-time” offer.
Behavioral economists have long said that emotion — not logic — drives most financial scams. Which is why, in my opinion, Starling should make this feature more playful: imagine a cheeky pop-up that says, “Whoa, cowboy.
That vintage PlayStation looks suspiciously cheap.” Turning caution into conversation could make AI protection feel less clinical and more human.
There’s also a ripple effect happening beyond the UK. Banks across Europe are reportedly eyeing similar technology, and regulators are already exploring frameworks for “responsible consumer AI.”
Meanwhile, experts in online-safety circles, including those tracking how voice cloning scams spread through social media videos, warn that scam detection must extend beyond marketplaces to video and voice content too.
Because soon enough, fraudsters won’t just send fake listings — they’ll send your own cloned voice asking for money.
